Misfuelling prevention device success on the dragons den

Misfuelling Prevention Device Features on Dragons Den

DDN’s Fuel Angel, a misfuelling prevention device, had a tremendous success on Dragons Den, gaining investment worth £250,000 from the ‘dragons’ to help commercial development of a device that prevents drivers from filling their diesel vehicles with petrol.

The Fuel Angel can replace the fuel filler cap on virtually every model of diesel car, van and light commercial vehicle to prevent the nozzle of unleaded petrol pumps being slotted into the wide-bore neck of diesel tanks.

The DDN team appeared on Dragons’ Den in August 2008, seeking support of £250,000 for a 20 per cent stake in the company.

Two of the ‘dragons’ were so impressed with the product that they pledged £250,000 of their own money for a 25 percent stake in DDN Ltd.

After appearing in the Dragons’ Den, the DDN team decided to go it alone but thanked the Dragons and the BBC for the opportunity and support. Director Michael Cotton, who led the presentation during filming of the programme, said: “Since filming the Dragons’ Den programme the interest from around the world has been phenomenal. We have launched the product in the UK but have also acquired patents for Europe and the USA. We are receiving inquiries from as far afield as Australia.”

The Fuel Angel retails at £49.95, which is less than the current cost of a tank of fuel for many family cars.

Michael added: “It is estimated that between 150,000 and 200,000 motorists every year fill their car or van with unleaded petrol instead of diesel. It costs anything from £250 to £12,000 to drain the tank and repair any damage that may have been caused by running on the wrong fuel, not to mention the cost of the fuel that is lost when the mistake is discovered.”

“Practically everybody fills up with the wrong fuel at some time and incidents are increasing as a result of families having more than on car – some petrol and some diesel – and several members of the family needing to fill them up.”

“Not only does it cause terrible inconvenience, it can also be dangerous. Engines can cut out at any time through the wrong fuel being used and if this happens in the fast lane of the motorway or in a remote location of a country road at night, the consequences can be serious.”

“It was terrific to get such enthusiastic support from the ‘dragons’ and we are very excited about being able to go into full production of the device.”

The Fuel Angel uses a number of adapters to fit the various kinds of fuel tank caps and it is estimated that it will fit ten million diesel vehicles on the UK roads that are vulnerable to misfuelling. To date, only new Ford and BMW diesel vehicles come with factory-fitted misfuelling devices.
